Buying Credits and Upgrading Plans

Written by Kadri - RichAPI Support Team

The dashboard sells credits as one-time packs, with no subscription. An organization owner buys a pack on the Plans & Billing page of the dashboard. The Enrichment Pass on the RichAPI pricing page is a separate yearly plan for profile and company enrichment. The rate tier of the organization follows the credits that the organization buys in each billing cycle.

What is the difference between a credit pack and a plan subscription?

A credit pack is a single payment. Stripe charges the card one time, and the credits land in the organization balance. A credit pack carries no recurring fee and no subscription, and RichAPI sells no monthly plan. The Enrichment Pass on the pricing page is a separate plan for profile and company enrichment, billed yearly.

A rate tier is not a product. RichAPI derives the rate tier of the organization from the credits that the organization buys inside one billing cycle. A larger purchase raises the tier. The tier controls the request rate, not the credit price.

How much does each credit pack cost?

The Plans & Billing page shows six credit packs. The prices below come from the credit pack definition that the dashboard and the API share.

The list rate is 1 credit = $0.02. The dashboard marks the 50,000 pack with the Most Popular badge.

The discount column compares each pack against the list rate. For 50,000 credits the list rate is $1,000. The pack costs $800. The saving is $200, which is 20%.

Past about 50,000 credits a month, Enterprise rate cards price on committed volume. Use the Contact Sales button on the Plans & Billing page, or the form at richapi.ai/contact-sales.

How do I buy credits?

  1. Open the dashboard and select the workspace.

  2. In the sidebar, open Usage & Billing.

  3. Select Plans & Billing.

  4. Find the pack that you want in the Buy Credits section.

  5. Select Buy on that pack. The dashboard redirects the browser to Stripe Checkout.

  6. Enter the card details. To apply a discount, enter a promotion code.

  7. Confirm the payment.

Only an organization owner can buy. Other members see the notice "Only organization owners can manage billing." and the Buy buttons stay disabled.

Stripe returns the browser to the Plans & Billing page. After Stripe confirms the payment, RichAPI adds the credits to the organization balance. The Transaction History table then records the purchase with the type Purchase.

The credits arrive through a Stripe payment event, not through the browser. If the balance still looks unchanged, reload the Plans & Billing page after a few seconds.

CAUTION: Do not close the Stripe Checkout tab before the payment completes. Stripe cancels the session, and RichAPI adds no credits.

How do I upgrade the rate tier?

RichAPI has no upgrade button. Buy more credits inside one billing cycle, and the tier rises.

  1. Read the tier table below and find the credit total that the target tier needs.

  2. Open Usage & Billing > Plans & Billing.

  3. Buy a pack, or several packs, that reach that total inside the current billing cycle.

  4. Complete the Stripe payment.

RichAPI recomputes the tier as soon as Stripe confirms the payment. RichAPI then applies the new limits to the organization, and every API key in the organization shares them. The change takes effect on the next request.

What are the rate tiers?

A rate tier sets the sustained request rate of the organization, shared by every API key in it. RichAPI resolves the tier from the credits that the organization bought in the current billing cycle.

A burst allowance of twice the sustained rate lets a client spike for a short time. Each pack on the Plans & Billing page shows the rate that it reaches, under Rate limits with this plan. The Rate Limits card on the API Keys page shows the current rate of the organization.

Only purchase credits and bonus credits count toward the tier. Trial credits do not count toward the tier.

The billing cycle of the organization starts on its billing day. RichAPI sets the billing day from the creation date of the organization and caps it at day 28.

What happens to unused credits?

Unused credits stay in the balance. RichAPI never clears the balance at the end of a billing cycle, and never clears it on a tier change.

Event

Billing cycle rollover

None. The balance carries over in full.

Tier upgrade after a purchase

None. The new pack adds to the balance.

Tier downgrade at cycle rollover

None. The balance carries over in full.

Stripe refund

RichAPI reverses credits in proportion to the refunded amount.

A second credit pack

RichAPI adds the new credits to the balance.

A tier downgrade changes the request rate only. An organization that buys 25,000 credits in one cycle and buys nothing in the next cycle drops from power to base. The unspent credits remain.

Do RichAPI credits expire?

Credits from a credit pack do not expire. The credit balance and the credit allocation records carry no expiry date.

How many free trial credits do I get?

RichAPI grants 100 free trial credits. When a user creates a first workspace, the grant lands in the organization balance.

The limit is one trial grant for each user, for all time. If a user creates a second workspace, that workspace receives no trial grant. The database enforces the limit.

The dashboard records the grant in Transaction History with the type Trial.

RichAPI needs no card for the trial grant. RichAPI also needs no card for an API key. Create a key on the API Keys page and spend the trial credits at once. For the procedure, read Creating and Managing API Keys.

How do I set up auto-reload?

When the balance drops below a threshold, auto-reload buys a credit pack for the organization. RichAPI charges the saved card without any action from a user.

  1. Open Usage & Billing > Plans & Billing.

  2. Find the Auto-Reload card.

  3. Turn on the switch beside Auto-Reload.

  4. In Reload when credits drop below, enter the threshold in credits.

  5. In Reload amount, select a credit pack.

  6. Select Save.

Setting

Cooldown

24 hours between reloads

Auto-reload needs a saved card. If no card is on file, the charge fails and the balance stays the same.

If auto-reload is off, RichAPI sends an email alert at 90% and at 100% credit depletion. If auto-reload is on, RichAPI sends no depletion alert.

For the full auto-reload procedure, read Enabling Auto-Reload for Credits.

How do I change the payment method or download an invoice?

RichAPI uses the Stripe billing portal for cards, invoices, and billing details.

  1. Open Usage & Billing > Plans & Billing.

  2. Find the Manage Payment Method card.

  3. Select Open Billing Portal. The dashboard redirects the browser to Stripe.

  4. Update the card, or download an invoice.

  5. Return to the dashboard from the Stripe portal.

Auto-reload and the billing portal are for organization owners only.

The Plans & Billing page also shows a Transaction History table. The table lists the last 50 credit allocations of the organization.

An automatic top-up from auto-reload appears with the type Purchase. RichAPI records no separate auto-reload type.

Only a purchase through Stripe Checkout carries a receipt. For an auto-reload row, a trial row, a bonus row, and a cashback row, the Receipt cell shows —.

What happens when credits run out?

If the organization balance cannot cover a call, the API returns 402 and runs no request. RichAPI charges no credit for the rejected call.

To clear a 402, an organization owner buys a credit pack on the Plans & Billing page.

Status

Meaning

What to do

401

The API key is missing or wrong.

Send a valid key in the x-api-key header.

402

Insufficient credits: the organization has too few credits. Monthly spend limit reached: the team reached its spend limit.

Ask an organization owner to buy a credit pack on the Plans & Billing page, or to raise the team's spend limit.

429

Too many requests for the rate tier of the organization. Every API key in the organization shares the limit.

Wait for the seconds in the Retry-After header, then send the request again. To raise the rate, buy more credits.

How do I check the credit balance from the API?

Send a request to the usage endpoint. The usage endpoint costs 0 credits.

cURL

curl https://api.richapi.ai/api/v1/usage
-H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY"

Python

import requests

response = requests.get(

headers={"x-api-key": "YOUR_API_KEY"},
timeout=60,
)

if response.status_code == 402:
print("Insufficient credits. Buy a credit pack in the dashboard.")
else:
response.raise_for_status()
print(response.json())

Node.js

const response = await fetch("https://api.richapi.ai/api/v1/usage", {

});

if (response.status === 402) {
console.log("Insufficient credits. Buy a credit pack in the dashboard.");
} else {
const data = await response.json();
console.log(data);

Frequently asked questions

Does RichAPI charge a monthly subscription fee?

RichAPI charges no monthly subscription fee. The dashboard sells credits as one-time packs, and Stripe charges the card one time for each pack. The Enrichment Pass on the pricing page is a separate yearly plan for profile and company enrichment, with no monthly option.

Do RichAPI credits expire at the end of the month?

Credits from a credit pack never expire. An unspent balance carries over into every later billing cycle.

How do I get a faster request rate on RichAPI?

Buy 5,000 credits or more inside one billing cycle. RichAPI raises the rate tier of the organization and applies the new requests-per-second limit on the next request.

How many free credits does a new RichAPI workspace get?

A new RichAPI workspace gets 100 free trial credits. Each user receives that grant one time, on the first workspace that the user creates.

Does a tier downgrade delete my RichAPI credits?

A tier downgrade deletes no credits. A downgrade lowers the requests-per-second limit of the organization and leaves the balance untouched.

What does a 402 response from RichAPI mean?

A 402 response with Insufficient credits means that the organization has too few credits for the call. A 402 response with Monthly spend limit reached means that the team reached its own spend limit. RichAPI rejects the request and charges no credit.
